Europe hosts thousands of trail races every year. Picking the right one shapes your entire training cycle, gear choices and nutrition strategy months before the start. A poor choice costs more than just the entry fee.
This calendar contains 35 hand-picked trail and ultra races between 50 km and 330 km. No road marathons, no flat courses. Every race listed here covers real mountain terrain with significant vertical gain, technical sections and alpine conditions.
The season opens in southern Europe as early as February. Transgrancanaria on Gran Canaria traditionally marks the start of the European ultratrail season with mild temperatures and volcanic terrain. Portugal, Croatia and Spain's east coast follow from April onward.
The alpine heart of the season runs from June through September. This is when the big mountain races take place: Lavaredo Ultra Trail, Eiger Ultra Trail and the UTMB weekend in Chamonix. Racing at high altitude demands experience with steep ascents, night running and unpredictable weather.
In autumn the scene shifts south again. Ultra Pirineu in the Pyrenees and Cappadocia Ultra Trail offer demanding courses in more stable conditions. SaintéLyon in December closes out the European calendar.
Three factors determine the right race. First: vertical gain relative to distance. A 100 km race with 3,800 m of climbing like Istria 100 is a fundamentally different event than 100 km with 7,200 m on Mount Olympus. Second: the season. Heat, cold and daylight hours affect pace, fueling and mandatory kit. Third: logistics. Travel, required gear, crew access and cutoff times vary widely between events.
